How is Cork Made?
.
Technically cork is not ‘made’ it is a completely natural product that is harvested from the bark of the cork oak tree. The traditional process for cultivating cork trees has stayed the same for hundreds of years.
This sustainable and eco-friendly process takes place in Southern parts of Portugal and Spain or northern regions of Africa.

A Traditional Process
.
Skilled craftspeople are required for this delicate operation. Using a special long-handled hatchet, the descortiçadors’ cut vertically across the mature bark. The axe is then twisted in the gap between the outer bark and inner tree to loosen the bark.
With the bark loosened they carefully tear the cork free. The cork slabs are then stacked and left out exposed in the sun, wind and rain for up to a year. This process gives the cork it’s gorgeous color and maturity.

Gorgeous and Natural
-
Once mature the slabs are boiled in water and the rough outer layer is stripped away. This treatment works to soften the cork and make it more pliable; it also removes a lot of impurities.
With the cork in perfect condition, it is then cut and prepared, allowing the humble cork bark to find a myriad of uses.
Mascolori is proud and excited to use cork in our incredible range of cork shoes
